I was looking through the Chevy Duty catalog and noticed a heater and defroster assembly (catalog #68-991A $149.95). Since my old dog lacks a heater and it could sure use a defroster on these cool, foggy winter nights at the beach, I was thinking this might be a good add on. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this unit and how hard / easy it might be to hook up and what kind of room it takes up in the cab. Thanks!

better to buy a good used or rebuilt original one and take the Chevy emblem off and replace with repro GNC emblem - will fit correctly and look 1000 % , plus it doesn't lower the value of your truck come re-sale time . not many in So.Cal. came with heaters , I bought one from a fellow stovebolter for $50.00 .
The Trucj Shop in Orange , Ca. sells them and is having a 10 % sale towards then end of november - they're on Batavia .

Hey 54 GMC!
Well, an original would be nice but I took a different route 'cause I'm never selling mine. Did buy the one from Chevy Duty and it is fine. Mounted it well up on the firewall at a point where the rad hoses came in. Three bolts, nuts and fender washers made it secure. installed the heater fan switch over by my left knee in an old existing opening and hooked the flex hoses up to the defroster vents. Coupled this with a rebuilt heater temperature regulator (from either Jim Carter or American Classics) and it works beautifully! Good luck! wink

Hey Mechainiac!
What is involved in installing one of those original heaters? And when you say "cleaning up" what does that involve? Might be interested if clean up and installation isn't a major production...I have no idea what they'd go for, what would you take? Also, I assume if original it's 6 volt.

Here's a heads up: Just bought Chevy Duty's "special" hammered look heater assembly paint in the 12 oz spray can. $11.95! eek eek But wanted that original look. Get the can of paint and its the same stuff I can get at Ace or True Value Hardware for $5.99

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the Stovebolt. You might post your request in the truck parts wanted area and check the truck parts for sale area. I think I saw a heater over there. Not sure you saw that this thread is about 10 years old.
