My new heater valve for my '55 Second Series truck didn't come with one and they say it's not needed, but what was it there for in the first place?

it was there as the temperature sensor for "automatic" temperature control - I think GM figured out it was redundant as they eliminated it by the end of the TF series, using the 'temp' lever alone and counting on a stable coolant temp controlled by the engine thermostat
