old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 | Ive searched, and couldnt find too much about this question specifically.
Im looking to convert my front brakes to disc.
Im going to be using a Sids 4" dropped axle, and was wondering who's converted to discs up front.
I dont really want to use a mustang II kit. Ive seen a few kits online for disc brake swaps, but It says spindles must be machined down to work, and most of the kits are 5 lug and not 6
Anyone have any input on this, Can you convert to disc without modifying spindles?
Ive seen kits anywhere from $200 - $1000, The huge price range makes me wonder.

Also the instruction said to drill out the lower mounting holes of the spindle and tie rod controll....i didn't do this as there is no need.I replaced the existing bolt with a Grade 8.As far as price goes it cost me about $700 with a power booster that goes under the cab.Don't worry ill_52 it's not that bad to do.....good luck

Just type in the part #'s on the search feature and you will see both kits. Let me know what you think and if you got more questions just shoot..... | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 | i did the disc con version.had to do alittle grinding.cost,239and change atspeedway motors. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | There are at least 2 different 6 lug kits. One made by CPP and one made by Performance online. Most of the vendors get the kits from these 2 suppliers.
I have used the CPP kit, and am curently dealing with their customer service about bearings. I don't have anything positive to say about CPP's customer service, or the quality of the bearings supplied for extra money. I have gone threw 2 sets of the roller bearings in 3 years. I will update this if CPP's customer service surprises me and replaces this last set. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 | the kit i used fromspeedway, had tapered bearing, seals, everthing down to the cotter pins.they use 11 inch disc.there were tags chev,i am assuming that these are the camaro disc. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 34 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 34 | Bigbadswingdaddy if you can let us know what the customer rep says that'll be great...!When I ordered my parts from Classic Parts the boxes had CCP on them...and yes I also verified their price tag and it came out to be the same. My truck is not on the road yet since I'm still working on the 4 link rear suspension ...please keep us posted ....many thanks

They are shipping me a new set of bearings and miscelaneous parts. I had a long phone conversation with one of the reps following up. Apparantly I am the only one that has had problems with the bearings.
I do use my truck as a daily driver and a work truck. Perhaps the bearings are not up to the task of carrying loads. Perhaps I got the only bad set of bearings. Anyway the replacement bearings from CPP will not be going on the 59 1/2ton. I will instead use them on my 1940 project. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 | i did the disc con version.had to do alittle grinding.cost,239and change atspeedway motors. I dont mind a little grinding. What do you have to grind, the spindles? I saw this speedway motors kit for $239 and it looked pretty good, but in the ad it lists chevy passenger cars. I wasnt positive it would work for truck applications.. Id imagine, that this is still manual brakes then, since it doesnt come with a power booster? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 34 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 34 | Good deal Bigbadswingdaddy...that is customer service.I'm sure you'll get your 59 on the road in no time, and many thanks for the update. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 149 | you are right i still have manual brakes.the grinding is not on the spindels.the back side of the calipers interfer with monting brackets.there is interfernce, with the hump on the axel.the kit is sold for chevy pickups.i am using my kit on a1954 gmc.is there a differance? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 1,897 | no difference between chevy and gmc axles. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 20 | http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Brake-Kits-GM-Metric-Mustang-II-to-1949-54-Chevy-Spindle,2014.html
