I have a new intake manifold, carb, and air cleaner. I'm not sure how to put this breather in the new air cleaner. thanks Brett | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,826 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,826 | You've got a hole in the block beside the distributor, right? There's a can-shaped part plugged into the block under the intake manifold that was intended to prevent oil from being blown out of the road draft tube that was once used for crankcase ventilation. If there's an adapter on the outer hole with a hose going to the breather, the PCV valve is probably plumbed into the oil filler pipe at the front of the intake. Connect the PCV to the fitting at the rear of the block, and use a vented oil filler cap in a valve cover to let ventilation air into the engine. The canister under the manifold can be removed and soaked in solvent, or just heated with a torch to burn the sludge out of it. We used to clean them by pouring in a few ounces of gasoline and setting them on fire on a gravel driveway. Jerry

Do you know of a site with pictures or a waqy to just get rid of this thing? thank you Brett | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,826 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,826 | I don't know of any illustrations, other than possibly an original service manual. The engine must have some crankcase ventilation, so use the block vent with the original canister under the manifold as an attachment point for the PCV valve. Run a piece of crankcase vent hose from the block vent toward the back of the carb (I think it's the same size as 5/8" heater hose) and insert a PCV valve into it. Plumb the PCV inlet to the big fitting behind the carburetor, 3/8" vacuum hose, IMHO. Then let the vent air into the engine through a vented valve cover oil filler cap. Problem solved! Jerry
