The starter on my 63 GMC fleetside (305 V-6 engine) is FUBAR'ed. I have the factory service manual which gives Delco Remy part numbers of 1107751. Can anyone please give me any info on other starters which may fit? I have had the unit for the 366 Chevy suggested to me by the guys on 60-66 GMC board, but unfortunately only NAPA part numbers ( 46-4078, 46-4841 and 46-5103) which I'm struggling to cross-reference from this side of the Atlantic. My hope is that one of these will also apply to a British or European vehicle, FLT or similar which will, as you'll understand, make it easier for me to source the part. Thanks in advance Kev

In my experience there are many different Delco starters with the same overall length, they just use different "noses" at the drive end to adapt to many applications. You may be able to find a more common application starter and transfer your "nose" to it, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Kev UK, some research revealled that 1107751 was superceded by 1107752 and another application was all 1962 - 65 standard transmission 409 engines | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 46 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 46 | Hy Kev UK, could you tell us what is wrong with the starter? It's FUBAR'ed! One field coil is totally shot, will need re-bushing and probably a good clean-up at least on the armature. Solenoid's fine though as is the pinion gear and the rest of the nose cone. I hear what you're saying about the different noses, that was my guess too hence the request for more info in "what fits what". Forgive my ignorance please; I presume the 409 is a Chevy engine, what sort of year were they fitted? Thanks buddy.

Both engines have M-shaped valve covers. The 348 was a last-minute addition to the 58 passenger cars, when Chevy got tired of their 57 model 283's getting outrun by Ford's 312 engines. The 348 was originally intended to be a medium-duty truck engine, never supposed to be used in cars. A solid lifter camshaft and 3-2-barrel carburetion helped the 348's catch up to the Fords- - - -until the Ford 390 came along! Jerry

My neighbor put me on to a local guy who's one of those rare breeds, a man who can fix anything auto-electrical, and loves a challenge! He does a lot of the local farmers tractors so is no stranger to Delco-Remy. Going to take it down to him tomorrow and get a verdict on it, he sounds positive. I'll post news on here as I get it, might be of use to some of you other guys with the "what fits what" scenario.

Somewhat cheaper than sourcing a refurbished one from over here, cheapest price I could find from an American car parts specialist was well over $400.
