Hi,

I've got a 58 Apache, which came with a 283, which is sitting in it now, with front mounts. I'm fix'in to swap out a 327 for the 283 and wanted to go to side mounts. I ordered a universal cross member side mount conversion. Seemed like a good idea to me to just slip under the truck and bolt it to the 283 to locate the holes in the frame and drill and mount it, then pull the 283 and drop in the 327.

The problem is the cross member interfers with the emergency break cable lever. Have you encountered this problem? How did you solve it. Oh, FYI it has a 4 speed manual muncie gear box.

I was thinking of just ditching the cross member and going with the front mounts...what do you think?

I'll round off that bolt head....just as soon as I'm done strippin' this screw!

I have a 59 Apache with a 327 and Muncie 4 speed. When I bought mine it had a 283 with front mount, a homemade copy of the orignal type. I didn't care for the mount and decided to change it to side mounts, I couldn't find a side mount I liked either. Finally I made my own mounts, these bolt to the frame just below the top of the frame rail and forward about 2" from the normal location due to clearence for an HEI distributor.
The basic mounts are towers that use the side engine mount positions and no crossmember. They work well and even allow for the axle clearence as mine is mounted above the springs. If you take some time you should be able to come up with something similar that works. I would send pic's along with this but I'm deployed in Iraq at the moment(sorry). I hope this helps just the same. smile

I'd go with the front mounts, which will work fine on the 327 - they're strong enuff, no reason to re-engineer things

Generally those side mount kits are used with a later auto trans whereby you cut out the existing rear crossmember and install a aftermarket crossmember with a mount on the tail shaft. It moves the engine forward a couple of inches and makes room for an HEI distributor. If your 4 speed has a rear mount you could do it this way. It just seems like a lot of cost & work with little gain.
