I am going to powder coating the wheels on my '51 3100. The truck is Forester Green and Black. I cannot match the Forester with powder coat locally - what other colours would be acceptable. It appears Green and Black are my only choices. I don't want to tart the truck up but, would like it to have some pop! Any advice appreciated. Thanks as always. | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 864 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 864 | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | The black stock wheels on my Forester Green 3100 are set off with a stainless trim ring and and stock hubcaps with the red lettering. Not too bright but good looking.

White walls were not available until '54 but, hey, it's my truck and I'll tart it as I please! I like the red though and may reconsider - it would pick up red in hubcaps! Thanks for your input. Nonetheless, of course, do what pleases you. I have a friend with white walls on a black 1953 GMC long bed - they look real nice. | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 252 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 252 | Tim I thought I had read somewhere here that white walls were not available until 1954. Maybe that was just for autos? Were whitewalls ever available for pickups? I want it to look nice but, don't want to look silly and that I don't know what I am doing.
Having said that, I am only three years older than my truck and have no idea of what was available at the time - so I wouldn't expect anyone else to unless they are real fanatics - like us (??). | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | Peter,
Whitewalls on trucks were not a GM option through the Advance-Design years and into the Task Force years. I think I saw them listed for some trucks in 1960 but I do not know if that was the first year.
I am 4 years older than my trucks. I gave up years ago being concerned about looking silly.

Heck, they think I am the original driver anyway so who is going to challenge an old guy. You are right, I have earned the right to finally do something for myself! Sounds very Oprah-ish, eh? | | | | Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 38 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Jul 2009 Posts: 38 | Why not paint it Forester Green? I am still amazed at the amount of people that powder coat parts like this.... while powder coat is decent for something that needs resistance from rocks ect... it isn't really that much more durable then paint in an application like this if done correctly. Most factory rims are painted as powder coat has a tendency to flake off when it is compromised... | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 252 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 252 | Thanks for all your comments. I have decided to paint the wheels with the regular Forrester Green paint that I am using for the rest of the truck. I think I got carried away with the idea of powder coating and forgot about the days when everything was enamel. I will spend the $$ on wide white walls (even outragiously priced)and there not authentic for the period.
The green wheels, wide white walls and chrome hubs with red Chevrolet lettering with be quite a statement in itself. Zen. Less is more! Thanks for all the input from you guys!!!
