I have a 1953 Chevy PU, 235 6cyl. 4spd floor. I have recently started having problems when I get just past 45mph. It sputters and then dies out or stalls. I have replaced the fuel pump, changed the fuel filters, completely cleaned the carburator, but it still stalls out on reaching 45 mph.
Any suggestions as to what could be next to fix, repair or replace?

How clean is your tank and it only does this at 45mph?

Does it start up again straight away?

A friend of mine had a similar problem although it was more to do with distance travelled rather than a specific speed.
After about 10/12 miles his car would splutter and die.
He would wait 5 mins or so and the thing would fire right up again,10/12 miles later, same thing.

He traced it to a blocked gas tank breather,if you released the gas cap you could hear the tank sucking in the air.
Once the tank had reached a certain point the vacuum would over power the the fuel pump suction and it would stall out.
I'm wondering if this speed in your truck is related to the fuel demand of the engine?

Might be worth checking.....

I'm going to drain the tank tomorrow so I can flush out any debris and I'll check the breather tube. Thanks for the imput.

I have had fuel filters partially plug, and at higher speeds start cutting out and when I slow down (using less fuel) it picked up again. Also I have been using a suction filter since I have had the fuel pump get little pieces of rust in it an stop pumping, this is only 4 years after putting a for all practical purposes new tank in. Good luck flushing it out I tried that for 2 years before I finally just gave up and got a new one.

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, after letting my truck sit through the winter. The truck would run at idle, but when I gave it more gas, it would choke and die. I called one of my friends who told me to clean out my carb float bowl. So I pulled the cap off my carb by where the fuel line goes in. There is a tubular shaped screen, I pulled it out, sprayed it out with carb cleaner, reinstalled the screen, and the problem was gone. It happened a couple more times in the first mile of driving. So I repeated the process. I have not had a problem since.
I think that I am going to a bbq in Sebastapool this afternoon, if you want someone else to look at it. I'll send you a PM.

Thanks for the advice, I, unfortunately am not up in Sebastopol today, I'm down in Daly City. I took the carb apart and cleaned it but didn't know there was a filter in the inlet tube. so I'll check that out and clean if its there.

I believe you're right on this one. I took of the gas cap and ran it up the road and had no problems. Thanks

It just seemed you'd eliminated all the other possibilities,I thought it might be worth a try.
Glad it seems to have worked out for you.

Now go and enjoy your truck! thumbs_up
