I just received the "new" engine and started looking over it and thinking about what issues may pop up in the swap.
The main thing I see is that the oil filter and lines will need to move to allow room for steering column. Any ideas where to get replacement lines or other options for moving the oil filter? | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | I'm using a remote filter set up I purchased from Summit. I'm just not sure where I'm mounting it yet. I've seen them on the high side firewall, inner fender shell, and low on the block using a homemade bracket. It might be one of the last things I mount after sorting out of other attachments such as the intake ,exhaust, generator, etc.

There are two different types of oil filters used on USA 261s: a by-pass filtration canister, used from 1954-1957; and, a full-flow canister, used from 1958-1963.
Both systems can be easily mounted on the intake manifold (as original), or mounted low on the block, or mounted in a remote location (off the engine assembly). The original location is forward of the carb for the by-pass canister and rearward of the carb for the full-flow canister.
Hoses for the by-pass system are readily available (from most reproduction parts vendors) and full-flow system hoses can be easily made (with parts from Jeg's Summit Racing, etc).
What year 261 do you have?

Wix filters offers a couple of different remote filter set ups that are easy to get, easy to work with. And any good hydraulic hose shop can build your hoses.

Mount it where you want it, have hoses built locally. Your local auto parts store should stock this and be able to build hoses.

Oiling system I could not run the stock setup since it would not bolt onto my Offy intake. To dress it up, I painted the spin-on fitting you can buy at most FLAPS black, and I use a NAPA gold 1515 oil filter and spray paint it yellow. Looks like a modernized AC Delco setup.

I've been sidetracked with other projects (happy wife and all that), now I'm back to the truck.
I've got a 1961 engine with the oil setup behind the carb.
I'd like to keep it on the block and just move it in front of the carb. The kits on the Summit site look like what I need. I was under the impression I'd have to use stainless formed lines instead of the flexible lines. | | |
