Hey guys

I just replaced my fuel tank with a new one. When it had the old one, the fuel gauge read way past full all the time. After replacing it, it went down to empty...then I put about 20 liters of gas in, and it still reads empty. The sending unit is new too. So I figure it's the gauge itself? What could be wrong?

Ohms. That's what could be wrong. If the Ohms rate is wrong on the new sender then it won't work. Are you using the original gauge?
Your ground or hot connection was probably bad on the original sender, and that's why it didn't read correctly. You might try to test it and repair it since it probably is still better quality than the new one that you put in.
These Guys probably know as much as anyone about correct senders. I bought one of their units for my 6 volt truck and it works great and was only about 50 bucks or so.

I have a question on this. Is there a good way to test/troubleshoot the senders?

Mine has always read high. So I bent the float arm a little to try to adjust it, but didn't see much improvement. Is there a way to test it to see if it's bad? (I have a '64 GMC 1500)

have an easywire harness need trying to figure light switch which wire goes where

i replaced my gauge and sender and then figured out i had a short in my sender wire... now my gauge works perfectly, except that half the time it doesnt work at all. but once in awhile it's awesome.

seems to me if you ground the hot wire at the sending unit the gauge should read full, unhook that wire and the gauge should go to empty.

check your ohm readings.My 65 was 3 ohms empty and about 37 full newer trucks from sometime in 65 they switched and the ohm reading is 0 for empty and 90 for full

This is kinda a dumb question, but...the fuel guage works off resistance? From where to where would I put the probes of my multimeter to get an ohm reading for this? On the sender itself or the guage somewhere?

i think you would disconnect the wire on the sending unit at the stud, measure from the stud to ground with ohmeter.

Is your new tank grounded? You should have a ground wire from the flange of the sending unit to the cab. Check for rust where it is screwed to the cab.

To check the sending unit, measure ohms between tne stud and ground (flange of the sending unit) while moving the float up and down.
