Hi guys.
My vacuum advance went south.
I have a 60 235 in my 53. I don't know if it came out of a car or truck (any way to tell?)
Anyway, I went down to Napa and struck out on a replacement; their books only went back to 63. I tried Autozone. I don't think they're aware trucks existed prior to 83.
Does anyone happen to have the part number?
Thanks much,
-Chris

Chris,

If you want to know in what type of vehicle your engine was originally installed, the engine serial number (engine ID) can often help. This number (code) is pressed into the block in the ledge just to the rear of the distributor.

Post the code here or look at this excellent page by K. Hardy - The Old Car Manual Project.

Thanks Cletis.
I did a quick web search for that part number and it comes up as 46-53. They may be exactly the same for the 60-61 235. do you know?

Tim, Thats a great site. I had looked mine up some time ago on the inliner's site. http://www.inliners.org/becks/BCN2.html
My casting number from the block on the pasenger side matches one of three numbers for a chevrolet truck from 60 or 61 (3769716) but the number behind the distributer (F0603B) dosen't match any of them. So I'm still a little unsure what exactly I have.

Well allow me to get out me trusty(and dusty) parts books.....

According to my Echlin(NAPA) book #103 dated 9/82
the correct vacume advance for a '60 Chev truck 235cid eng.(all except forward control) would be a VC-500

Now we turn to my trusty Standard Blue-Streak book...... The number Standard lists for the same application is a VC-13 vacuum unit.

Also according to the NAPA(Echlin) interchange the VC-500 NAPA # is the same as the VC-13 Standard #......

Now for the final test..... My huge (10in thick) DELCO REAMY book......

Here I find that for 1960 chev. truck a dist. #1112403 (group 107-A) was used with a vacuum control #1116089.

Group 107-A referes me to the illustrated complete break-down page where I find ALL parts and part numbers for the dist. listed...

Now as I cross the DELCO number it confirms that the Echlin and the Standard ##'s are both correct.

Now if your eng happens to be out of a car, the corrisponding dist. number would be 1112403 (gp 107-A) with the vacuum control being # 1116140.

Now the Delco vacuum control number 1116140 for the CAR dist. (sorry to say) does NOT cross over to either a NAPA(Echlin) or a Standard Blue-Streak number....

Now if by chance? You happen to have a distributor with a different DELCO number than what I've listed..... Feel free to drop me a note with the actual number from your dist. and I'll look it up in my DELCO bible... and my STD and NAPA books to see what we can find

I hope this helps
michael

Graflexmaster,

To ease the burden of your move to Tulsa, you could send me all your reference and parts books...they must weigh a ton!

Well to answer your question..... in a word "NOPE"..... lolol

it took way too many years to collect them all... and yes.. they take up a few bookcases... I also have all the Western Auto parts books going back into the early 40's.. with applications back to the 20's

Wow.
Thanks a bunch michael!
I'm with Stuart. If you ever need clear space on the bookself, maybe Stuart and I could thumb wrestle for them.
Yesterday I went though my parts and found a vacuum advance on one of my other distributors. I pulled the vacuum line off so that I could test it, and found that the problem was with the line, not the unit itself.
I should have caught that. The line wasn’t threaded correctly and was leaking around the threads.
Anyway, now my vacuum is holding steady (relatively) at about 19psi and is running much better at higher rpms.
Its nice to know that someone out there still has those parts books. I think NAPA must have had a book burning day at some point because I get a lot of "I can’t find that"(s). It's frustrating, because when I was a kid (I had a 52 in high school) they seemed to have most everything, and usually in stock. One would think that as they move into computer searches, they'd be able to cross refence in a heart beat.
Someone needs to invent a quicker method of scanning so that parts books can be added to the old car manual site.
I’ll be bringing home a 28 sedan this summer; I have no idea were I’ll find parts for that. I guess thats part of the challenge smile
Thanks again,
-Chris
