Welcome to Stovebolt.com

GMC or Chevrolet truck?

Many things on these trucks might have been changed over the years. And. parts from different years and models are often co-mingled on the same truck.

The answers to the questions below might add-up to a better idea of what you have.

Do you have a title or registration? If yes, what number/code/ID is on it?

Do you have a web-album of photos of the exterior and interior of your truck. If yes, post a link to it/them.

Is there a metal ID tag on the cab between the hinges on the driver's side? If yes, post the code.

How many lugs/bolts on the front and rear wheels?

What is the wheel base (a measurement from center of front wheel to center of rear wheel)?

Single piece curved windshield or two flat pieces of glass for the windshield?

Can you post photos of the hood side emblems (if there are numbers, post them here).

There are are large number of subtle (and not so subtle changes/differences} in sheet metal, trim, gauges, drive train, etc.

As stated at the beginning, many things on these trucks might have been changed over the years. And. parts from different years and models are often co-mingled on the same truck.

This is probably too much information, but here is a list of differences between 1947-1955 (information obtained from many websites and documents).

Keep posting information until you/we can figure out what you have.

By the way, is the truck running?

Post pics! Someone here will tell you the make, model, gross weight, rear gear ratio, tire size, and a bunch of information you don't want.

Thanks. Sorry- it is a Chevrolet. It is my OOTD project (one of these days :)I have had the truck for over 10 years- it is just sitting in a field surrounded by lots of other vehicles. No motor, no tranny, but the cab is complete and straight. No title either. Next time I am up there I will try to take a few pictures and jot down some pertinent numbers, now that I have a rudimentary idea what to look for. It is about 2 hours away from me right now and won't get any closer until my wife sees that it is running under its own power.

Does it have vent windows? Yes? If so then the 52 through 55 1st series has push button door handles. Vent window and pull down door handles, it's a 51? No vent windows, then it's 50 and earlier. Don't forget the pix

See if this image comes up. It is the only one I could find. I guess I'll have to go up there and take some more. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/medium/DSC018462.JPG

That shot tells us it's not a 54 but that's about all with out a door.

My guess is an Early 1949. Not a 1947/48, not a 1949 late or later. My guess, it has an in the cab gas tank, rules out 1947/48. It had a thriftmaster emblem on the hood, making it an early 1949 and a chrome plated front emblem. Chrome grill rules out most 1951's or later. Bet it has an outside vent on the drivers side and the doors originally came without window vents.

The mfg year would be less important to me than how much steel is left. It probably could be used for parts but with at least one door missing and possibly the other as well, I'd be looking for something a bit closer to complete. Those rusted corners etc. can turn a hobby/project into a nightmare; just ask Alvin.

Looks like it has been resting there for a long time... just waiting for someone to wake it up. Lots of guys have started with worse. It's a 5-window which many folks find more desirable. And that bright grille is might near perfect. Those I.D. lights on the top are usually found on 1-ton and larger trucks, but since they are add-ons, that really tells us nothing. Does it have a pickup bed? Hard to tell from the picture.
Good luck... you'll need it! Have fun with it, but Whatever you do, be safe.

Be safe? ME? Always. That's why I always say, "Here- hold my beer and watch this!" Gotta keep both hands on the wheel!
