Lost the original years ago, got a new one on order and hoping to make it fit the D-shaped shaft with set screw. Surely someone has done this before?? It's a little thing, but I don't care for the modern-looking black knob that comes with the electric wiper conversion.

Newport sells a switch shaft extension, the description says it will accept the original knob.

I dont know if that extension will work in your application, or if it will keep the jam nut off the dash

I mounted my modern switch under the dash and ran a remote cable to it.

I have a few underdash pics in this folder

I used a reproduction knob and original escusion.

Excellent setup there DAD. May try my ultra precision dremel skills at shortening the modern shaft, maybe drilling a small set screw hole in the front (least visible side) of the knob and seeing how well they work together.

Geesh, forgot how far the nut causes the whole thing to stick up. Maybe stack some washers underdash to bring it down. I might have to live with 1/8-inch or so gap between knob and dash, we'll see.

Everything seems like it's the easy way until after you do it. Sorta like experience. You don't get it till after you need it.

I like your setup using the original knob. I too do not like the look of the aftermarket relacement. They make a plastic chrome one that is suposed to "look like the original" but is very cheesey looking.

Where did you get that drive cable?

I did have to use a reproduction knob.
The original knob is pressed onto a barbed shaft.

I drilled and tapped the repo knob for a 6/32 set screw.

The cable fit inside the original escusion and I filed a flat for the set screw.

The other end of the cable fit over the shaft of the modern Newport switch shaft. ...pic...

I dont know where the cable was ordered from. It was a spare from mechanic I know.
I can only guess its a flexable shaft for a rotary tool or something like that.
its 3/16 diameter and 16 inches long.
