Driving a 64. 283 4 speed. I start off in 2nd gear. When starting off such as first thing in the morning....the truck drags considerably at the start...it almost feels like the brake is on. My emegency brake is completely disconnected so no drag there. When I stop at a stop light and accelerate in 2nd (after drving for a little while) there doesn't appear to be a any dragging or struggling when starting off.

Any thoughts on what might be the issue? thanks john

sounds like the "issue" is you aren't using the choke properly, or it's an automatic choke working poorly

1st in a truck 4spd is geared quite low and is not noted for a speed gear. most do start off in second with those trans. 1st is only used in cases as if you have a heavy load and need that lower gearing to get under way or as some would say if you were out pulling stumps in a field

Make sure your fluids are the correct weight/viscosity.

Clutch slipping?
Brakes dragging?
Engine sputtering/missing?
Is this a new problem...all of a sudden-like?

If you can't fix it with a hammer and screwdriver, you need a bigger hammer.

thanks guys for the thoughts....the carb is automatic and probably has a few hundred miles on it.

The engine runs solid. I had trouble with the emergency brake where it wouldn't release the brakes. I eventually disconnected the emergency brake. it does fell like the brakes could be dragging. I'll have to pull the tires and drums off.

for the most part this is a new problem. not what a slipping clutch feels like.
