i installed a used 270 in my carryall,on start of the engine i noticed /no oil pressure at gauge or coming from the left side of the block? i removed the dist. and primed the motor and oil squirted out very easy from the oil line p/u on drivers side of motor ,! then install dist ./crank over engine /no oil pressure ? what is happening ? it does have an acces. oil filter, and i replaced the lines ?maybe did i do something wrong ? any ideas anybody ? thanks mike

Are you sure the distributor is seating in the pump slot?

By the way, oil filter on a 270 is not an accessory. It came standard. But even if the lines are blocked you should have pressure at the gauge outlet.

i did measure from the block to the top of the tang area-4 5/8" it looks like it is fully engaged it slot tang plus the dist body was down against block! im still thinking maybe i did something wrong on the external oil lines ?im in the process of cking that out now !

There's not a whole lot that can go wrong with the external oil lines. One line goes to the bypass filter if it has one. Another goes to the head to oil the rockers, and the third goes to the oil pressure gauge. I would pull the plugs out and pull the valve cover and spin her for a while. If oil appears at the rockers, you have oil pressure. You could be taking a reading on a stopped up line or something like that.

prime the motor again with someone watching the pressure gage. if you have pressure then the issue is what cletis said it is. been there done that.

i double checked the dist. length the old one was 5 7/8 long ,from the bottom tang tip - to the top of the lower dist housing {which is where the adj. dist hold down goes up against ! the dist. i was given to me ?was about 5/8 of an inch shorter !!! is there a late and early 270 dist. ? the old broken dist. had a # tag on it of 1112414/6l24 does anybody have a way of checking this # to see what year it is ? thanks guys

A 1112414 Delco is correct for a 56 to 59 270. Any GMC from 228 to 302 will work, but the advance curve may be wrong. Early distributors used a different cap, but they all will mesh with the oil pump. I suspect that you have a distributor for something other than GMC.

the dist. that didnt work was #645t/897646 it was tagged a 58 270 gmc BUT i now know it was tagged wrong!{can anybody tell me what it was made for with these #s ?} the original 270 dist that was in the motor had a bent shaft in it and a cracked housing ? now im off to find another dist ? thanks for the help guys !

That number doesn't sound like a Delco number. Does the tag say Delco, Autolite, Holley, or Prestolite? That might give a hint as to what it fits.

I don't find that number listed anywhere. I wonder if someone didn't rebuild it and that is their number.
