If I didn't know better,it looks to me like some kind of heat exchanger??
Are the two smaller openings threaded,they also look if they have a tapered seat.

Hopefully someone with a better idea will chime in soon.

It's an automatic tranmsission cooler, for an early Powerglide IIRC.

Bingo! It fits in the lower radiator hose, and cools the transmission fluid by circulating the coolant around a coil of tubing inside. The fluids don't mix, the coolant just cools (or heats)the tranny fluid. The Powerglide makes a lot of heat, especially when the torque converter is assisting engine torque during breakaway from a stop.

Cool, I was leaning toward a heat exchanger like Jock but had no clue as to the exact application. Can't say I didn't learn something today.
