If you're going to use a 400, you will need the correct flywheel and balancer for it. Check with Summit or Jegs if you canot source one out, they carry aftermarket flywheels for that engine.

Like Fleetside says it will vibrate. I have seen in catalogs a adapter that goes between the flywheel & crank with the weight on it. The idea doesn,t sound good but manual flywheels for 400 are hard to find & expensive. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

IIRC it shook pretty hard, you wouldn't want to drive it. I have only seen one 400 powered '78 Camper Special that had a 4 speed, most all 400s were autos like Wrenchbender wrote. I think an aftermarket is available & not too awful spendy(less than $200 I think). Check on Summitracing. Brian
I just checked they are $229 @Summit, inflation I guess.

After figureing it out I knocked the weight off the flexplate & it worked fine. Not to long ago a friend of mine was asking me about the vibration in the engine in his step van. He happened to mention it started after he had a new flexplate put in. Shure enough I got under it & they had put in a 400 or 454 flexplate. I had to go in with the torch to get this one off but that solved it. Back when I was in business a guy had to eat his own come backs. They say money can't buy happiness.
