Ok, so I have to get a bit more help for the next step of trying to troubleshoot my C-30 with a 292.

Problem as of now - She will idle just about all day and be happy. Once warmed up she will start to hestitate and stutter while in gear. Then she will stall out and die. Let her sit for a moment and she starts right up....only to stall out a few minutes later. (When first purchased, she ran for over 30 minutes before starting to backfire and die...hasn't backfired recently.)

Work done to date:
  • 1) New distributor cap, wires, plugs
    2) New fuel tank, lines, pump, added inline filter
    3) Checked the timing and lean/rich mix

Work planned for this weekend
  • 1) Check/reset the rocker arms (all valves seem to be moving fine)
    2) Retest drivability

Current symptoms I have noticed ...
After running a cleaning oil change (1 quart trans fluid with oil) and then a oil and filter change....the front of engine developed a tapping noise. That is what started my quest under the valve cover...and #1 exhaust was very loose.
Also while idling the exhaust will occasionally have a small burp. It is not constant and at idle is not loud.
I did find an exhaust leak from gasket between intake and exhaust...just a little one, but I can feel it puffing out.
When she starts to hesitate and stall my foot is still on the accelerator. If I take her out of gear and goose it, she will rev up, but once back in gear she starts to stall again.

Any ideas what I need to do next?
  • - Points? (not my realm of expertise)
    - Ignition? (it looks very old)
    - Carb? (she does that choking thing when you gas it too fast)
    - Exhaust? (there is one gasket leak and some holes in pipe before muffler)(supprisingly quite even with that)

Thanks
Dave

Sounds to me you have a carb problem. That choking is that not enough fuel is being delivered when you open up the throttle and too much air is entering the mix. You might want to open up you carb and check the floats ect..

Check the point gap. It,s possible a bad coil but I dought it. Like apache says almost sounds like the carb. I can tell more when I get over there. George

I think it sounds like the carb too. It would be a good idea to replace the points, condencer, and coil too, this will give you a freshly tuned up ignition you can count on. just my 2 cents.

What transmission? Diagnosis of stalling in gear would be different whether automatic or manual and whether or not the clutch was in or out.

Four speed manual.
And it is while in gear with no clutch. If I clutch and move to neutral...she seems to be ok...but rolling backwards... eek

Hey George, I sent you a PM. As soon as the covers are back on, I'll let you know.

It is great to have experienced people around here.
