there was a '54 1/2-ton w/ this same camper shell listed on craigslist out here in the Bay Area for months recently. if it comes on again, i'll take a snapshot of the ad and post it. looked super similar to that truck there... except a '54.

I saw this one on ebay a few years ago. I think it is on a 3800.

I also saw this one somewhere and just had to save the picture.

When I was about 6 or 7 my grandpa made a nice camper from a 48-49 Chevy 2-ton school bus.

There you go Dan, gotta agree with ya on that one. I've spent many hours at your site and think those really look like they belong with these trucks. They fit the period just perfectly and are well within the price range to buy or build for anyone that is on a limited budget. And it taint a pain in the ars to remove when you want to go bare-back.
I had a cap on an old truck I bought about 25 years ago and swore I'd never have another whether it was a cap or bed mounted camper.

I hope i can explain this. i thought it would be great to get another rear part of the cab and turn it around and fabricate sides and then get another one and mount in the rear for a door. it would seem if the cab came all the way back to the rear of the truck. i wish i could use photo shop too illustrate what i mean. most toppers or camper don't seem to fit the contours of the AD's. the tear drops seem to fit the era but i am a bit claustrophobic and it don't know it i could sleep in one. i did see one with a pop up top that a six footer could stand up in.

For the claustrophobic , I just sold this 1960 Serro Scotty 13' camper. It is no heavier than a teardrop, has a 74" wide bed, and tows very nice. They made them from the late fifties to the early seventies. Sink, stove, fridge, table.

Me too!!
I have a couple other pictures somewhere of one of those. When I get my 1 ton back together I'd like to build one. The curved corners make it look good, and I'll probably use aluminum for most of it.

Would make a nice upgrade from my previous top

To complete our touring package, my birthyear '59 Apache 3200 Stepside will be pulling my wife's birthyear '64 camper.
We're dreamers... I think it's awesome.

Ron sounds like you want to make is what's called a Suburban.

A camper to me is like the teardrop or scout, something that can be picked up or dropped at the campground or at home in five minutes or less and lets you get on your way without hauling around the extra weight.

Grigg, that looks like a great reason to have a 7'+ bed!

My truck has a 9' bed, so 6' sleeping room and 3' for tool box, fuel cans and stuff, it works out great.
After having a 9' pickup bed I don't know how folks deal with such short beds on the smaller trucks....
