For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 14 | can anyone tell me what yearof block chevy started the up from the bottom staggered bolt pattern on the starter thanks,Mike | | | | | Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 11 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2010 Posts: 11 | I am not 100% but I believe it was 72 for trucks and 57 for cars but that would include the straight across bolt pattern as well as the staggered. I believe the staggered was for 168 T flywheel and the straight across was for the 153 T flywheel. I am sure I will be corrected if wrong. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 843 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 843 | rodtek1, there is a Delco "Mini" version of that starter that is used in various GM applications and has a 4.44 ratio planetary gear set and gives great header clearance. I found one at a swap meet for $20, took it home and relubed the planetary gears, polished the aluminum part and installed it in my roadster. It stays way cooler than the long direct drive starter because it is so much farther from the headers. That improved hot starting. No wiring changes were required.

The key was as spectra said the ring gear size dictated where the starter bolted and most trucks with manual would have kept the 3 bolt starter and large flywheel but aluminum powerglide in truck would have had the small ring gear and starter bolted to the block. So when did the truck get the small flywheel/ring gear? The 64 parts book says "57-61 all and corvette 8cyl except turboglide"--this would be the 3 bolt that bolts to conv/clutch housing. "62-63 passenger & corvette w/PG (327)& 1963 series 10-20 w/PG and 292".This would have been the starter bolting up to the block. They offer one for turboglide only 57-61--no mention of the "terribleglide" for truck and it seems to have been superseded by the aluminum case PG in 62(why did it take so long?).
