Thanks for you time

I believe the banjo is good for about 350 HP and 350 lbs of torque. I ripped the banjo apart in my 59 gmc 1/2 ton with a mildly built Pontiac 389. My 389 was built for about 345 HP and 450 lbs of torque.

I have a fresh rearend, all new components, drums and all, with 8lug axles. If you need a backup,I have one. It has 456gears,it came out of a 51 Chevy 3/4ton pickup. In real good condition,I swapped to an S10 posi-trac 373 gears. I have a overdrive tranny, with 350 small block. I am located about 30 miles north of Dayton,Ohio. Good Luck, and Best regards. | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 68 Smokey 56 | Smokey 56 Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 68 | Thanks for the responses! It was not uncommon to see massive wheelspin, washboard turns, and repeated full throttle/coast cycles with no damage whatsoever, and all of this with the spider gears welded together so both wheels would hook up equally. Those old 3/4 tons are about as bulletproof as they come, just extremely heavy. We used Muncie 4-speed car transmissions in 2nd. gear against the 4.56 gearset for short tracks that measured 1/4 mile around the outside fence, and 4.10's on "long" 1/4 mile tracks that were measured around the infield perimeter. With a 1.88:1 2nd. gear against a 4.56 rear end, the overall ratio was 8.57:1. The car would come off the turn at about 3,000 RPM, and wind up to 6,500 or 7,000 by the end of the straightaway. On a 25-lap main event, the rear end got at least 50 of those RPM cycles. Counting practice, qualifying, heat races, and the main event, figure on at least 200 full-throttle accelerations and chopped-throttle turns every weekend, all summer! Yep, I think yours will hold up just fine! Jerry
