old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 12 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 12 | I am mostly into antiques but I got a perfect antique 46 Chevy so my other one I want to put a modern gear under it for using and going to shows hauling my stuff. Has anyone used a DT466 IH around here? I would like a B Cummins but they are a bit on the pricey side and a school bus with a DT466 is worth about what it weighs out plus you get a 545 Allison with it and a rear end to match. I don't think the T444 or any of the other V8s are going to fit but if anyone has done this please let me know, thanks1

Its a proven power plant and transmission though. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 12 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 12 | I don't mind doing some mods on the cab firewall and floor but I hope the height of the DT466 don't get in the hood. Might have to shell out for the Cummins yet. Now that I want to measure one I can't find a DT466 around to look at but the B Cummins looks like a pretty easy fit.

I'd also be kinda scared of the stock frame, considering the extra weight of the engine and trans, not to mention it's probably putting out three times the torque of the original 216. The Cummins may be a better choice, but I'd still box the frame rails or stiffen it up some way. You may be time and money ahead by just swapping the 46 cab onto a Dodge 1 ton rolling chassis.

I just about have to use the school bus rear end for the right ratio and since my semi uses the same 22.5s the buses have anyway it would only makse since to use it, plus I like airbrakes anyway. If I set the body up a bit it appears the tires have room in the front fenders, yea, its a bit wide but I think it will work. I am really wanting a truck that looks nice enough to go to a show yet will last me the rest of my life. Pulling a big load with a pickup is not much fun and its safer when pulled with something with more feet on the ground. I just can't see any reason why it won't work other than now that I am wanting to buy a bus there doesn't seem to be any close.
