I am getting to that point where I need to figure out what color I am going to paint my 49 3100. I have a few ideas and will probably go with something basic becouse this will be my first paint job. It got me to thinking, how did other people pick there color. Was there one in your past with that color? Was it maybe your favorite color?

I picked the same blue as my 2003 GMC Savana. The two trucks are 50 years apart in age and will both be used in my construction business.

I haven't painted yet, but when I do I'm going with something close to the original green w/ black fenders and running boards. Why? Besides being super classy, it's the color scheme my old man went with when he finished his 1950 1/2-ton. That's as good a reason as I can think of.

It was the 4th of July, I was 17 and sitting on a Lake Tahoe beach with some friends. I heard a rumbling behind me. I turned and saw the coolest truck I had ever seen backing up to park. It was a bright yellow 55 Chevy truck, lifted with late 4x4 running gear. It was at that moment I knew I would have one. Fast forward 22 years and I am almost done with my bright yellow 55 Chevy Napco.

Mine was painted John Deere Yellow when I bought it.I just never changed the color.I didnt like the color,but the paint was good,and after a while it grows on you.Besides that with that bright yellow,I never lose it at a cruisin.

Forester Green with cream pinstripe is an original color, And looks fantastic.

I just like green now. I used to have a thing for the blues, but blue just didn't feel right for the truck.

Had a thing for dark blue metallic ever since my model building years - think I saw a Barris creation in Car Craft !!

Mine was actually a mistake. I had originally planned on Harbor Blue, which is a '56 passenger color that's pretty close to the original Crystal Blue mine came with. The paint store I use didn't have the mix codes for anything pre-'55, and they didn't have commercial codes that far back, so I went with what was close. The fellow that mixed the paint (no longer there) got the wrong code, he used the one for the next color up, which was Skyline Blue. Since I didn't paint the truck until several months later, I didn't realize what happened until I shot it. But since it turned out very well, and I liked the color, I left it as it was. If I eve repaint, I may go back to the OE color, as I have the correct code.

I went through color books at the paint supply to find a color I liked. My 51 3100 I owned back in my 20s was Forester Green but I wanted a green that didn't show its age so much. I picked a mid 90s Ford pickup metallic green. I then had black added to that color to make the fenders and running boards a darker green that was a blend to the cab hood and bed color. Great guys! I will probably go with two tone. I have all the sheet metal but the rear fenders. With two tone I can get the cab, hood, bed, etc. done now. then when I get the rear fenders I can paint them and I wont have to worry about the color not matching right. I also like the looks of the two tone. I am thinking blue and black.

With blue and black you won't have to worry about clashing colors. If you add black to your cab color you can have your fenders a darker color that blends with the other color. Whatever you choose I'm sure you will be happy with it.

agreed, blue and black or green and black, both great choices. now i'm looking forward to photos!

I am going out of the box on mine with some classic 50s two tones, Just because I have memories of those colors on cars my parents owned and I think they look good together and flat out say the era of rock and roll done 50s. Its my truck and I can do it the way I want to.

I remember those colors. My favorite was the 1950/52 Ford PINK. Pink was hot color in the early fifties.

On my 53 I went with the Transport Blue and on my 54 I went with Ocean Green with the dash in off white, I really like the Green.

I did not want red, black, or yellow because they are over used in my opinion. i have a theme when i do things. i wanted unicorn for a personal license plate but it was taken so i got Oryx which is considered by some the basis of the myth. the coloration is a brownish gray and they have black markings on their legs so the bottom part, running boards are black.

I was forbidden from choosing red, yellow, black, white, green, gold, copper, or orange. <sigh> so i choose the color that 99% of the walls of our house are painted in .. Tan. LOL

I went with a dark grey Imron with a super light hint of metallic dust on my 49 COE. If I did it again I would skip the dust as you really have to look close to see it. My personal opinion is any older vehicle seems to be more at home under a solid color. Particularly big trucks.

One consideration folks might want to think about is the availability of that color when a fender bender results in a need to paint, and matching color is important.

It also depends on if it will be a daily driver or a weekender.

I wanted to look period correct without being a slave to factory colors. Created lots of photoshop mockups, asked for lots of opinions, finally made a model painted with the exact colors as a proof.

Ended up with Mini Cooper Pepper White (very close to the correct cream)for the hood, cab and bed with tan fenders (no vehicle match, just a code I liked) just a bit lighter than the Hollywood Tan from the factory, then added a maroon body stripe, dash and wheels (again a color code). It all goes nicely with my new logo.

I went with yellow for old times sake. The one I had back in the late 60's was yellow too.

If that's not good enough, too bad. You'll just have to hold your water until it's completed and on the road!! And no, I won't predict when that will be. If my wife can't drag it out of me, you sure as heck can't.

You have a bet there ole Farmer. There is the annual rod show in Blanco TX. each May. I'm shooting to get her down there then. You should try to do the same.

My companys logo is blue and gray and we paint all our cranes that color, cab and booms gray, fenders and reinforcement plates on boom blue. When I bough the truck (it is still red, Mater as in Tomater), I thought it would be a nice idea to paint it two tone to match the cranes, so it look cool on the jobsite.

How do those painted cranes fly?

What do you mean by that? Wanna see some pictures of them? I'll gladly post them. The truck is not ready to be painted yet.

My son picked it out. The previous owner had color very close to the one Nick chose. A little more metalic in ours!!
