looking into different ways to get highway speed out of my 1951 3/4 ton. tranny swap looks pretty pricy.

was advised that i could improve my stock rear ends ratio by swapping ring and pinion gears. didnt know this was possible. sorry if its been covered but i cant find out anything about it. would appreciate some advice. sure would be great to keep the stock 3/4 ton rear end and cruise on the highway
thanks

The only way to change the ratio on the stock diff is to swap the 3rd member out to one from a '68-'72 3/4 ton with the 4.10 gear. Unfortunatly, there are no current aftermarket gearsets for that particular differential.

What do you call highway speed. Back in the 50's we drove 3/4 tons 60+ mph all day long. You just have to get used to the noise. The 4.10 gears are getting hard to find and then are very expensive to fix if they need repair. Another option is finding a 55 and up 1/2 ton parts truck and swap both axles and basically you have made a 1/2 ton out of it and have a 3.90 rear.

I am already planning on swapping out the front axle for a half ton in order to use a ccp disc brake kit in the front.

have just been offered a 10 BOLT REAR END OUT OF A 67 EL CAMINO WITH DRUMS ATTACHED; the ratio is 3.08. how much hauling/braking capacity would I lose? basically i want to still be able to haul as much as i would in a half ton. i have installed and rebuilt a 283 so i have a bit more horses than i would have originnally i am just not sure what the el camino parts will be capable of.
any advice would be appreciated i am a total rookie.

Go over to the 67-72 chevy truck board and poke around and you will find a 4:10 Eaton. It looks like several of the 67-72 guys over there have them.

Shipping is pricey tho.

I'd think the 3.08 would be a good swap if the width is right. It should easily move a half ton load. The only problem I see is 5 lug wheels. However if you are putting discs on the front they are available with 5 lug.

Reading your article on rear end changes prompted me to add some more food for thought. I just took out a set of 3.07 gears I had in a 65 Chevy 1/2 ton. It was in there for twenty years and had replaced a set of original 3.73 gears. When I ran H78x15 tires it was great around town and on the freeway. During the years I added a tire/rim size which is near a 10x15. It was still good on the freeway but was a dog around town and when hauling loads. I assume you have a four speed in your truck which has a little better gear selection than my stock three speed. Now the new 3.73 gears have a better overall performance for what I need, but I'm still looking for another gear for the freeway because the 3.07 ran so high. I would talk to as many people about this because you don't want to be changing these out too many times!

Truckboss, where in the S.F Bay Area are you? I'm in Santa Rosa.

I'm wondering what you are planning to do with that 3.07 '65 Chevy pickup ring gear and pinion? I'm asking because my son has a '66 pickup and he would like to change the gear ratio.

My stovebolt is a '36 pickup. I just regeared it from 4.11 to 3.55 by adapting in a '37 Chevy car rear end that I fitted with OEM Chevy car 3.55 gears that were used in '50-'54 powerglide cars.

I am in the Los Altos Mt., View area of the peninsula. The rear end has no future use here . It can go for money, barter trade, whatever. My e-mail is [email protected]. Thanks
I tried to e-mail you but returned as a failure notice. E-mail correct?
