Came across a 1st Series '55 Panel truck. Owner states it is 1 of 300. Any suggestions on how to determine this? As it sits, truck is all original, has visor and one piece windshield.

Appreciate any help that you can provide. Thanks!

Did you ask the owner how he/she came up with that number?

There is no known way to determine this (if there is, someone will soon let us know).

Thanks for the response. I have a call into the owner, but wanted to check here as well.

Just wondering because if somehow it is confirmed, as you know, it changes the value of the truck. I am not sure it is worth his current asking price.

because the 1st series 55's were only sold for a short time it's possible there weren't many panels sold, but also note they're pretty much warmed over 54's .... I wouldn't say claiming 1 of 300 has much bearing on the price, even if it could be confirmed with info directly from GM [very unlikely as Tim suggests], condition determines value, especially originality of condition

Thanks. The truck is on craigslist, link is below. Asking price, $1,800.

What do you think is fair price to offer?

I shy away from basket cases unless they're dirt cheap ... "rebuilt" engine sitting like that for 18 years, no manifolds? boat anchor - used for some time after rebuild and pulled more recently, just another old engine, poorly stored, condition unknown .... if all the sheet metal is present and perfect and you really want a panel 1800 might be justifiable, might try 1800 including the trailer wink

Chevy lost all data on production numbers of old trucks a long time ago. Several years ago, I talked to a guy that worked in the Chevy archives and he said that they continue to look for that lost info every day. Hopefully they'll find it.

All original? headscratch This is the first I've heard of trucks leaving the factory in pieces.

Chevrolet/GM might have lost track of their truck production-number annual-reports for Advance-Design years, but people have found production numbers for a few years: 1950, 1952 (partial), and 1953. (If anyone has Chevrolet/GM production reports for any other Advance-Design years, I'd be please to post them.)

in Canada, only one, Oshawa grin in the US, at least a dozen

I remember it being discussed here someplace that the records problem was partly due to a major fire at one location where a bunch of archives were kept

10 plants in 1948 and the same 10 plants in 1954
