If it doesn't, check the wire for continuity. If the wire is good the gauge may be bad.
If the gauge proves good, remove the sender and check the resistance through it's travel. It should vary from 0 to 30 ohms.

I took it out and what happined was the float had a hole and filled up as fast as I installed it. So I just put on a new one. If out of the truck hook the gauge (ign side) to +6V bat terminal with sending unit attached to other gauge terminal. Ground sending unit body to - bat terminal. Moving sender arm up/down should move gauge. That will determine if the units are working and give you a starting point.
