if have been working on resolving this issue with my brakes. 1954 3600. when i back up the and apply the brakes the pedal goes stiff. if i drive forward and apply the brakes it returns to normal.

i think the allignment between the brake cylendar piston and the rod with the slot on the end is getting out of whack so the return spring is not able to compress the piston back into the cylendar. the cylendar is in decent shape. i recently honed and rebuilt it. most everything else has been replaced or rebuilt.

has anyone had a simmilar issue or an idea as to why the alignment of that slotted rod would get funky.

Adjust the brakes. The shoes are moving far enough before they contact the drums that the pushpins between the wheel cylinder piston and the shoe is getting angled. Driving forward tips it back into position. Do you have Bendix or Huck brakes? A Bendix brake needs to be tightened to a firm drag on the drum, then backed off 10 notches from that position. Don't tighten the adjuster enough to lock the wheel, just go for a very firm drag.

i'll give that a try. thank you.

i dont know which style i have.

also, i did have them loose so they would not heat up and lock the brakes. too loose maybe.

Huck brakes were on earlier models, 1950 and earlier, I believe. The adjusters are different, also. Huck adjusters are at both ends of the wheel cylinder, with threaded pushpins to the brake shoes. Bendix has one adjuster, at bottom center. If there's one adjusting slot on the bottom of the backing plate, you've got Bendix brakes.
