After recently hooking up a new repo speedometer cable it started squealing intermittingly.
I removed the inner shaft and lightly greased it and reinstalled. Still squealed intermittingly.

Is the brass sleeve supposed to butt up against the Speedo housing?

Here is a pic of the inner cable installed as far in as it can go.

The brass colar is about 1/2 away from housing.

Am I suppose to cut the inner and leave maybe 1/8 clearance for the inside?


Like I said it’s a repo speedometer cable. I don’t know where it was ordered from. It was in a box of parts I had been given. Also the speedometer is used and refaced by myself.

The spedometer in the pic is a spare I used for demo.

I had a 68 SAAB that did that and it was the speedo head had run dry and the shaft eventually seized and broke my speedo cable. Try pushing a little grease in the end of the speedo head and a drop of oil.

My first attemp was to grease the cable

I would like to know if the cable will need to be cut or if the brass shoulder is suppose to fit against the end of the spedo.

If the collar doesn't butt up against the speedo end then the cable cap won't screw on all the way. My cable has a donut shaped collar that does butt up against the end of the speedo. Cable extends approx 3/4" into speedo drive hole.

That’s what I wanted to know.

I can screw the cap but looks like its might be jamming in and may be causing the squealing. I have it backed off for now.

Think I'll just order the correct cable. I don’t think I’ll be able to cut this one back. I would lose too much of the drive square. Plus it’s a little long.

Where did you order you spedo cable from?

I don’t want to order one just to have the same problem

Yep, that brass stop looks like it's swedged in the wrong place and there is to much of the drive end in the head. thats putting pressure on the bushing which it shouldn't have. you can trim some off the end but you will probably have to weld the end up after cutting it.
