The crankshaft and rods will swap with a 235, so the siamesed-cylinder block with the 3 3/4" bore and the pistons are the scarce items. Pistons are available new, in various oversizes in case it needs a rebore. Blocks aren't. Offer him what you think the block is worth, and scrap metal price for the rest of the pieces.

i'm still waiting on the seller to let me know when i can have a look at it
i also found a 261 in a chev c-40 or 60 i can't remember which, in a junk yard. i tried to spin it but couldn't get the trans out of gear so i don't know which is froze. maybe both.
that one is complete and they want 330 for it
i'm tempted to gamble on it

the motor was purchased from the local chevy dealer when it closed up
still wrapped in plastic
casting# 3769925 makes it a 59-62 261
it has crank cam and pistons only
it'll be a few weeks until i can look at it
he wants 500 i'm gonna dicker but 500 seems like a good price if it's in as good a shape as he says
i'd get a look at it sooner but my darn job keeps getting in the way!

If the engine is near you and/or near a machine shop, make a deal with the owner that you would buy the engine for $400 if the machine shop gives the block a good bill of health (you'll pay the machine shop). I do not even know if a machine shop could check it out - maybe someone else will chime in? | | |
