Hello again.

I am planning on pulling my engine now and the manual says to remove the hood is that necessary?
I will have the radiator and grill removed looks like it will slide out the front.

Just pulled the engine on my '55 1st series. I removed the grill, radiator, radiator support and support from radiator to grill. Hood still attached. Should work the same for you.

No u do not need to remove the hood. With the radiator and support taken off the motor and trans will come right out, no problem.

I pulled the following when I change my engine.

front bumper and splash apron
grille
radiator
core support

With the hood in place,I pulled the engine.This is the rebuilt 261 I put back in it.

I love the look of the valve cover, dual carbs, and exhaust setup you have in picture 16. I've been thinking of doing something similar on my 230. Have you gotten to drive it yet. Where did you get everything?

The valve cover and pushrod cover,headers came from Jim Carter.
Carbs are carter/weber from Tom Langdon stovebolt engine co.
Stainless steel exhaust from Patricks Truck parts.

Yes,it runs great,really strong compared to the old 216.

Yes,You can leave the hood on when removing and installing the engine.Just be careful with the front fenders,not much supporting them when apart like this.

Because a lot of the trucks I work on have such nice paint, I do not want to disturb anything, and I work alone, I do not remove any sheet metal.
I remove the radiator and water pump.
I unhook the hood springs, this allows me to prop the hood higher.
I do unbolt the bell housing and leave it in place. This shortens the engine enough to allow it to clear everything. You also need to attach the cheery picker as close to the engine as you can get.

If you prop the hood any higher on a 1947-1955.1,wouldn't it hit the wiper arms ?

Thanks Tim, I'm about at that stage with my '54. I had the front clip off my '50 for dip stripping when I pulled the engine but I don't want to get that deep into the '54.
I was looking at it just last week and wondering if the fenders and inner skirts would support themselves with out bending something if I pulled the grill and core support out.
I saw your Burb at KC in September but I didn't see the pickup. Did you have it there one day??? And I didn't get a chance to talk with you, hope to chat some next year. I'm hoping to have one of mine mechanically sound enough to drive out for the next reunion. Like your Burb, neither one of mine will be all that pretty on the outside but solid where it counts.
Enjoyed your picture album, thanks for posting them. I always enjoy seeing the shops that others work out of and the process that they go thru.

Denny,the fenders will support themselves as long as you don't start leaning and putting weight on them.I left my fender braces in place to help support them.
