I just got my hydraulic lifters from Kanter, and the bottoms on them are perfectly flat. I put them against a perfectly flat piece of glass and they don't rock side to side. I put them against a couple straight edges, and same thing, they are flat. I read they are supposed to be somewhat convex, am I incorrect?

Yes you are incorrect. The lifter is flat and the lifter bore is offset from the cam lobe so that as the lobe comes around it rotates the lifter. Something like the guy on the Ed Sullivan show that spun the plates over head on the end of a stick. There is a good illustration in the Shop Service Manual for Trucks.
I may have misled the group in an earlier post along the same lines, but Jerry I believe corrected me.

Some but not all lifters are convex.

Here's the page from the shop manual that shows the offset lifter bore on the stock Stovebolt six fern. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1948_51truck/51ctsm0640.htm

Thanks Denny, I was worried there for a minute. I saw this this thread where it was mentioned that lifters with flat bottoms are worn out and got concerned.
