I got a 1953 Chevy 235 with a cast iron Powerglide on it. I want to replace the drive clutch plates in the transmission case. I got good accumulator, good servo, and the low and reverse bands are good. Is it possible to remove only the transmission case for service? It seems to bolt right to the torque converter housing. Really hate like hell to have to remove the whole %#@$*?! transmission just to work on that section. :mad:

While you have it out it would really be best to do a complete rebuild. If my memory is accurate, the only special tools needed is a method to measure the end play or clearance in the drive train from the front of the main case to the thrust face of a shaft. This requires a selective fit washer to get it right.
You really want to measure this once and set it up right. I distinctly recall R&Ring a 60 cast iron PG 8 times because I tried to use a jury rigged tool to do this measurement. | | |
