Not sure what it is though. I believe it has something to do with the mounting or clutch linkage. All chevy 6 cylinder bellhousings are interchangeable from about 1937-1962. They also interchange with GMC from about 1939- 1959. That is to say any bellhousing from this era will bolt up to your engine. It may not necessarily bolt up to your transmission or chassis. Rule of thumb is to use the bellhousing that is correct for the year range and model... 1939- 1946 truck, 1947- 1954 truck, 1955-1959 truck. Not sure how the car bellhousings changed through the years, but the trucks changed from group to group.

I would think the I6 mounts are also different, but I can't locate any parts in a quick search.
I V8 and I6 truck bell housing bolts from the bottom of the crossmember with a single 1/2 bolt on each side, whereas the pass, car V8 has two smaller bolts each side that bolt into the crossmember in the horizontal possition. I am not sure about the car I6.

(example) the sm420 uses the smaller sized hole, the larger hole works w/ sm465's and T5's. I believe the difference is about a 1/4'' dia.
all later years of bell housings (same engine bolt pattern) will fit on an L6 &/or V8

I don't know how we ever got along with out it!I,m in the middle of building a really neat 53 1/2 ton,on a s10 frame(which you guys tlod me how to do)with a 350 in it and if I knew how to put pics on here ,I would show you some of it.The 6cyl stick is going into a 42 1/2 ton in the future. A friend has the bellhousing and flywheel but not sure what it came out of.The 6 is out of my 56 chevy car, it might bolt up to the stock bellhousing in the 42 now that I think of it . I'll check that out tomorrow. Thanks again!!

A later 47-54 bellhousing is a bolt up change, but it does not have the mounting holes for the pedal assembly. Jim Carter sells bellhousings (1947-1954) that have been modified for the pedal assembly in a pre 1947 truck. A more modern transmission... like the T-5, or muncie, or saginaw will bolt directly to the 47-54, or 55-59, or etc. The later transmissions will not bolt up to a pre 1947 bellhousing.

The reason for that is that the transmissions didn't change until 1948. All of the 47s including the late 47 Advance design models shared transmissions with the 1941-46 models.
