He said $800 for the truck and motor, at a closer look today i saw some concerns, 1 no brake booster, 2 no radiator, 3 rust in the rockers.... what should i offer? I was thinking 350 for just the truck, and 600 for the truck and motor, what do yall guys think? | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 164 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 164 | I say its worth scrap price and not much more, so $500-600 with engine. if you want to put it back on the road I'd look for a better truck. | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | If you deal on a trashed-out piece of junk like that, invest in a big jar of Vaseline! It's already been picked over for all the good stuff. I wouldn't offer more than $250.00 for the whole rig, unless he's willing to let me hear the engine run, do a compression test, etc. He's already made his initial investment or close to it by selling bits & pieces, so whatever you're willing to give will be pure profit for the junk man. What do you intend to do with it once it's yours? Jerry

That's if they will accept it as is. Some don't want tires, fluids, glass, etc.
That figure minus the cost of getting it to the salvage yard should produce what that thing is worth, unless there is some component still on it that has great value.

I would bet that we could find something, in a lot better shape, for a lot less money, that runs and drives.

I think if i got another cab from the guy, i don't see how i could go wrong. Is the brake booster and radiator that big of a deal? If it was missing the transmission i would understand... Im not trying to be rude, i just don't understand what's so bad about it? Thank y'all so much for the info! Then add $300.00 for the bed. Now you can see why we say you can do better. | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 3 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 3 | Well since yours is a 53 will there be that much difference in price?? | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 2,201 | JMHO, the 53 is worth double the 65 in like condition. There are a couple of really big items to consider. First, a C-60 was a commercial truck, not a pickup, so parts are going to be scarce and expensive. There's no sense stacking the deck against yourself by buying a non-running junkyard dawg that's had expensive parts scavenged off of it. Second, just why was it scrapped in the first place? If you discover there's major damage to the running gear, transmission or rear end for instance, you could get into twice your initial cost with the purchase of one item. The brake system will have to get a total overhaul, as those parts deteriorate rapidly from non-use. I'm very concerned about the 2-speed rear axle shifter being missing- - - -junk yard operators don't allow pieces like that to be scavenged off a good, serviceable item, so you'd better count on having major rear end problems. The cab is trashed- - - -a real rust bucket, and swapping to another cab is a huge effort. After you get it fully restored, what do you intend to do with it? It's expensive to license, and just buying tires will be a major expense. Do you have a commercial use for a 2-axle tractor without a 5th. wheel? About all it would be good for would be as a mobile home transporter, or something similar, unless you equip it to haul semitrailers again, which was probably its original purpose. Without air brakes, even if it was equipped for a semitrailer, its use would be limited. Us mechanics are eternal optimists, but we usually try to heal the sick, not raise the dead! Jerry

If it were a '53 in the same shape for the same pricing then you would be getting a fair deal...if the engine was indeed good. Seeing as how it is a newer large truck they are not worth nearly as much. If you simply wanted a work truck and it ran...had a radiator...and brakes...then it would probably be O.K. This would not be a good truck to try and restore though as it is missing so much of the interior, missing brake components, and has no radiator. I would say unless you find a great deal you are looking at a couple hundred to replace the radiator alone.
As a parts truck that would be a decent price as it is basically what scrap value is. The $300 for the engine though I would want some sort of guarantee that it is actually good. It looks like the front plug on drivers side may be missing as well...or wire is just off. If plug is out I would really question the engine.
Just noticed that it is missing the shifter for the 2 speed rear as well. That will be another $50(good) to $150.
