Hy shrek, we require more info to answer your question, firstly what size is your truck, and secondly what would you like to do with your truck??

It is a 1/2 ton with the stock running gear and a 235 from the early 60s I was thinking of putting a automatic in it but would a newer 3 or 4 speed with a open drive line be easier or better?

Better always begs the question better for what?

An automatic was not an option in 1950 so it won't be a better restoration. If your knees are as bad as mine it might be much better to drive with an automatic.

Easier is easier to respond to.

Unless you are going to convert to a Hydra-Matic from a '54 Chevy pickup any automatic is going to require swapping to an open drive rear axle. Most modern manual transmissions are going to force you to make that swap too.

Swapping to a newer manual is going to be easier than an automatic because the transmission will bolt to the existing bellhousing.

An automatic is going to require an adapter plate and removing the bellhousing and flywheel. You'll also need to fabricate rear motor mounts and buy or fabricate a transmission mount.

If easier is a primary objective and there are no compelling reasons to go automatic, I'd look at 4- and 5-speed transmissions from the 80's and 90's.

There is a 4-speed option that does not require swapping to an open rear. Patricks sells a kit to convert a Saginaw 4-speed to work with the original torque tube.

If I've missed an option I'm sure someone will be along to put me straight.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...
