I have a 57 3100 that came to me a few months back with a 265. The p.o. told me it was a 283 and was from the factory. I ran the numbers on the block and they are definately for a 265. I have read in a few different threads that the 265 was never factory installed in a 57 3100. I just got my shop book in the mail and it states that the only V-8 from the factory for the 57 3100 IS the 265. Now I need an answer to know if I should try to get the little 265 running, or pitch it in the corner and go for a somewhat customized drivetrain... Anyone know for sure which engine belongs in this truck? Thanks-
Dano smile

The 265 was the only V8 available on a 57 3100.

Baldy's 100% there - the 265 was the optional V8 for the 3100, 3200, and 3600, the 283 was only available in the big trucks

if yer into original, do the 265 [if it's the latest one with an oil filter], if ya don't care, then nobody would question a 283, a better choice IMO grin

Thanks Baldy and Red! Usually the shop manual is right on, but I had doubt for a minute there.lol
I can turn the 265 over by hand, so I might work over the wiring mess and try to get her going... I noticed that I have the oem style front motor mounts, but they are bolted in and not riveted. is there a way to tell if it was done aftermarket?
Thanks-Dano smile
