But As a certified Cummins tech, if you put the rings in lined up your gonna be pulling it back out. It is still a no go in the diesel world. Also if you run out of options the rings may have been put on in the wrong order. Looks like you need to dig into your engine and see what went wrong.
I think you have some broken rings. Will have to pull the head and oil pan to pull the pistons and find out.

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,771 | I remember getting called in to evaluate an oil-burning problem on a Ford 302 engine rebuild by a local shop when I was running the state trade school shop in Pulaski, Tennessee. After doing several diagnostic procedures without finding any problems we finally tore the engine down. One piston had been installed with the oil ring missing! I think the guy who did the rebuild had a chronic problem with Budweiser fever while he was on the job!
When you pull the pistons, be sure and check the cylinders for taper wear. If there's more than .005" of taper, it's very unlikely the rings will seat well, or last very long. At 2,000 RPM, the rings in a taper-worn cylinder are changing diameter 66 times a second trying to maintain contact with the cylinder walls.

Still a bit of smoke on the take off. Have 300 miles on engine now. Getting about 9 miles to the gallon, Also noticed the speedometer is about 10 miles slower than those road side speed readers.

I hear the truck will burn a bit more gas because everything in there is still tight.

If the power valve port is blocked by the gasket on the base, there will be no vacuum to it to close it. This has a big effect on gas millage.
Late ignition timing is also a cause.
