hey im putting my 54 235 block together and when i put the rockers on the post and start to tighten them down they are really tight and bend the push rods can some one help me

Hy 73scoutcrawler, welcome, I need a bit of clarification, what is the "post" you're talking about? When you go to install your rocker arm/shaft assemblies you shouldn't have or don't need your pushrods in place yet, and if you do install the rocker shaft assemblies with your pushrods in place, then all the rocker arm adjustment locknuts should be loose, and the adjusting screws backed off, hope that helps.

well i put the rush rods in place on the lifters and go to put the rocker assembly in place all the adjustments are backed off all the way and there are 4 bolts and 2 studs that hold the rocker assembly to the head and the rocker assembly wont sit flat on the head and if i try to tighten the bolts down it bends the push rods

Hy 73scoutcrawler, are you trying to re-assemble an engine that you took apart, or are you trying to assemble a bunch of parts that were never a running engine? In my parts book I can find four different part numbers for pushrods, and that is just for truck engines, I'm sure there is at least one more for the car engines equiped with hydraulic lifters, I think by the sound of what you're describing is happening, that you have a mismatch of parts.

Does your 54 235 have solid or hydraulic lifters? Here is a link to the Master Parts Manual that shows the lengths of the various pushrods made for the 235. As 3B says, there are several lengths available.

The rockers are numbered and in the shop manual it will give you the correct no. rocker for each location on the shaft the intake and exhaust rockers have different profiles because the intake valves and exhaust valves are different hts.Also the rockers are bent one way to fit the offset from the pushrod to the valve so each rocker needs to be installed in the right place on the shaft.

everything came off this engine i have solid lifters and all the rockers are on a shaft and were never taken apart so those are in the right order i had the engine shop put bigger vavles in maybe the tops are cut wrong they gave me everthing else like the lifter maybe those are wrong or to tall

Bigger valves from what?

Do You have the old parts to compare? If not go to the shop that did the work and get the old parts ,lifters and one each intake and exhaust valve, if they don't have the old parts I have a 235 powerglide engine in the garage and can check hts.

When you start to bolt down the rocker arm, do the valves start to open? I always install the rocker arm wnd then the pushrods, one at a time.

well i found the problem we switched to a hyd cam and the company sent us solid lifters
