Hi Folks,

In regards to a 1958 Suburban - Been looking at different sources and it looks like the GMC was a bit more upscale using the exterior two tone color schema also on the interior, and color matching things like steering wheel. While Chevy was a lot simpler with one tone different from the exterior color, and they didn't color match anything. Please let me know if I am out flying somewhere in lala land.

Anyways, even if it's a Chevy the car will be painted in Golden Yellow and White. Where it will be white roof, around side windows (both inside and outside), face of dash and door panels, the rest will be Golden Yellow.

Now the big problem is upholstery colors/materials.

I will have a carpet, sorry not super original but more silent and nicer for a daily use car - sorry truck smile.

Choice of carpet is black or light cream, sand color - I don't think a golden yellow will fly when it comes to carpet color.

Choice of seat is harder. It will be two tone vinyl/fabric where its vinyl on the sides and top of the back rests. But what color? I been thinking either white or silver.

The seating surface I kind of don’t want to go vinyl although it would make things easy just go Golden yellow smile. Here I have a few alternatives I been thinking off. Please let me know what you think!!

Cream lucente fabric:
Cream
Cream close up
Biscuit textured fabric
Biscuit
Biscuit close up
Bronze chenille fabric
Bronze

Gold chenille fabric
Gold

Gold very fine velvet

Please guys let me know what you think and why!! I need some help here..

colors are very much a personal preference [and yellow/white wouldn't be mine!], but Chevy did have deluxe interior options ... check this low mile original, especially the interior shot - owned by a Brit .... maybe you could track Steve down and have a personal look

Well... Bill said it right...it's a personal choice. But my choice would be this (given the selections you offered.)

"If it was me.........as the old saying goes" I would go with:

Two tone seats using Biscuit for the seat tops and lower back section of the backs and the Cream color for the lower perimeter of the seats (skirt) and tops of the backs.

Consider that these colors would complement each other and equally important consider texture differences too.

This color and texture selection would do well with the Sand colored carpet.

Think about the early 1947- through early 49 GMC interior truck cab color that is a brownish/metallic/beige/gold color. PPG makes the highest quality paint by using their their top end brand - highly suggest this - a real nice paint for this and your Suburban. The color is the same used on the 1986 Corvette known as Medium Brown Metallic. I have the color codes for PPG and the Nason brand paint lines for this color.

FYI: I did a little experiment comparing the two PPG brands and the Nason brand medium brown metallic . What you pay is what you will get and achieve in color, depth and overall look. The high end brand of PPG mixes about 12-13 color hues and their lower quality brand mixes about 6-7 hues. There is a difference. The Nason brand fits right in between these two PPG lines. And, the price range for each matches up to each other too...the Nason brand being right in the middle price range ...and the quality of depth and color quality compares equally to the price range.

Just my 2 cents to thnk about. Having another color inside is a nice touch and adds more interest to the vehicle.

...I'll locate the color codes when I can go back to the shop. HTH and probably muddies the water for you too! Aren't you glad you asked?

I like your color choices for the carpet and seats. tom

p.s.

If you have a hard time finding this color in the PPG line in the UK...let me know and I can order and ship some to you from the States. I would be happy to do this...and really think these color combinations would look classy and real nice....not forced but understated. or I can hand deliver it for airplane and lodging tickets!!

Hi Bill,

Yes I have seen that truck in the gallery and I'm actually going to NottingHam next weekend so I think i will try to track him down.

What I meant with the less upscale custom cab from Chevy is simply that the interior color combinations where not matching the exterior color combinations and there was not two tone interior color combination as with GMC.

Cheers Dyna

PS: I was first thinking of turquoise, pale blue and similar colors but there is quite a few trucks with that color combo. Then there is green (dark), blue dark, black etc but in my view it makes the truck look bigger and I think I want a more nimble look. Turquoise, pale blue was my first choice before I realized there is quite a few of them, yellow and white is a bit unusual, it will be my first ever yellow car if I go for it.

Thanks for a very long write up. You have some really good points there.

The cream and/or biscuit would go with sand colored carpet and would look all in all very nice.

You are right that you should think about both texture and color. However that said I think it's still an advantage to go with vinyl for the lower perimeter of the seats (skirt) and tops of the backs as well as the back side*. Using vinyl will make it easy to clean and it will be a smooth surface contrasting a woven fabric regardless of what ever fabric it is. The Bronz and Gold fabrics can be a bit to wild as in to much texture. The cream is better in that sence since it's more like that texture used in cars from that time period, it's also slightly metalic which reminds me of some of the nice fabrics available for Cadillac.

*I will use VW middle row seats from Slitwindow/Baywindow vans as second and third row in the Burb. And those seat also cover the back with fabric. To make it all uniform I will cover the back of the original Burb front seats with fabric too.

I don't know about going with a different interior color. I like when it's color coordinated. I've had cars with white dash before and never really had a problem. It might be bright but a bright interior is also one that gives a sense or roominess. It's funny how color affects how we interpret the size of things.

Of course I'm not saying that a contrasting or complementing color is wrong it can as you say make up for an interesting restoration but in this case I think i will stick with with color coordinated interior.

Oh yes I'm glad that I asked because if I didn't I would not get any feedback and sometimes even if you don't agree it makes you think again and look at things from a different angel.

As for paint in the UK, we do have all the big names PPG, DuPont, etc the problem is that the paint is not the same. US has a different environmental requirements from Europe so the mixing formulas doesn't work. For example I know I can get DuPont Crimson Firemist in he US, call dupont Europe and they can't mix it for you even if they know the US formula frown.

Well well, back to see what it will be.. color wise, thanks once again for writing.

I agree with Tom. Just to check. Are these automotive grade material? The reason I ask is that a automotive material is not only rated for Fire but usage. Most fabric for autos will be 6000 hours for example. Not only that.
Automotive material resists mold and Heat Brake down that normal fabric will not need to deal with.

Just thought that these are a big help. I can't wait to see what the interior comes out to look like!
