For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 41 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 41 | My 40 truck has an ignition switch that has a large spring behind the dash keeping tension on the chrome ring going through the dash. How do I remove the switch? Does the chrome ring turn? I don't see any flats when I push the ignition switch forward to expose the area behind the outside ring. I don't want to break it if it is not supposed to turn. There are no holes in the switch to put a paper clip into to remove the tumbler, but I just want to remove the whole switch from the dash. Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 | If it still has the electrolock it might have two screws that you access from the back side of the dash (at least that's how my 38 is connected).

There is a large spring that if you push from behind the switch, the chrome bezel comes thru the front of the dash to reveal a smooth round part of the bezel. It apears like it should turn to unlock it from the body of the switch, but no flats are on this round area. The bezel has acc, off and start, but no hole for a pin release in the tumbler area. I have not seen one like this. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,378 | Sounds like someone has put a different switch in. I believe the '40 originally had an electrolock (armored cable from the switch to the top of the coil). If you have a digital camera a pic or two might help us help you.
