Does anyone know how to turn on the emergency lights on the 1964 Chevy? I cannot locate a hazard light switch on the column or dash. Not sure if it was removed in the past as the prior owners butchered the electrical. Any advice or direction would be appreciated. If pictures would help, I can provide. thanks john

I don't believe they were part of the truck in 64. Mine does not have them.

i didn't think it was as I could not find any reference in the 64 owners manual. I suspect if I want hazards, then I would need to get an aftermarket component.

I have a 63, and it was an option. The 4ways were mounted on the bottom of the dash and pulled straight out. It had a red plastic cover that flashed. Can get pics tomorrow if you want. These are still found on ebay and other sites

There is also an aftermarket turn single switch to mount to your steering wheel (link below) that has a flasher lever on it. The one Jon talks about would look better but also will cost a lot more. Hope this help's I'm considering this for mine but for the turn signal part because the parts in the steering wheel broke and this is the cheapest and fastest fix for me seance I can no longer work.

My 64 4000 didn't come with hazards.

Search for "flarestat". The ones with "GMC" seem to go higher than others, but expect to pay $60-100 for a good one. I've been watching ebay for 2 years for a good one at a decent price. They have 2 connectors. Simply unplug a connector under the dash and plug the Flarestat in line.

If you buy one, make sure it was unplugged and not cut! If it was cut, you'll have to splice the wires.

I agree with the wiring. I just replaced all of the wiring in my truck, but had to reuse some of the wiring like the hazard harness. I made for a much smoother job than if the wires had to be spliced. I have the original 63 custom options book around here somewhere, il find later. The same hazard light was used in several chevy models, so looking for one in a car site might give more options, just beware of the possibly difference in connectors. If find the book and see what chevy says.

I've identified the hazards as the ones under the dash with a red pull switch. I've tried to get the hazards to work by trying many different combinations of having the ignition on or off, having the runing lights on or off and nothing works. What becomes strange is that when the running lights are on, the switch pulled out and the brake pedal pressed, does the light switch itself light up...but no flashing lights.

The turn signal switch wiring comes out of the column from the turn signal to a hub where it connects to the hazard switch.

Any thoughts?? The electrical has been butchered as the truck was formally a tow truck with electrical running all over the place to defunct mechanicals.

with the ignition on, the red pull switch will flash as the lights do. My switch takes 1-2 sec to start working. Ive got copies of the original wiring plans if you would like. Just send me an email w/your address and I can mail for you

NOS one on ebay now. They usually say "GMC" instead of Flarestat. Also, it looks like it needs spliced in.

I restore these switches for 59-66 Chevy cars and trucks and I had customer having a similar problem with a 62 Impala. Turned out that he had the wires to his brake switch reversed. Sounds like you may have a bigger problem since you stated you have wires running all over, but it might be worth a try.
