I posted this question over at the Radio forum but received no response... maybe I'm asking too many questions - I dunno...

I want to finally install a radio in my 56. I've been thinking of putting in a radio that has the classic face but is updated with FM (180 watts RMS (45 watts x 4 speakers 4 ohm, 14.4v, 1kHz)
But I was wondering if you guys could help me understand a couple of questions I have:
My biggest question is about speakers because we're not talking a cheap investment... Any suggestions about a speaker set?
I've been looking at the kickpanel replacements that have Pioneer speakers (I'm not sure if they are 70w or 100w). And underseat speakers (pair) with 51/2" woofer and 2 piezo tweeters 120w
I'm not the type that has a mega music library - in fact, I tend to listen to an oldies station most of the time. And I don't even know much about watts, 4ohm speakers, output, etc! I'm looking to simply install a set up that gives me good all-over stereo sound.

Any advice??

No advise from me...I don't have a radio in the firetruck. I do have a IPod and headphones that I use sometimes.

I get reasonable output in my '56 from a set of kickpanel speakers (the molded Pioneer abs type) and a set of fully enclosed speakers mounted on the lip of the gas tank behind the seat (I have '99 Tahoe center row seats so use the area under the seats for storage otherwise I'd consider the under-seat speakers. The behind the seat set is slightly muffled so this location is probably best for mid-range and base speakers. I think you're going in the right direction.

BUMP!!

Finally got my radio for my 56 - one of the repro styles from Antique Radio. I'm still wondering about speakers tho. Anyone have the kickpanel speakers in their 55 (2nd) or 56?? Any advice about speakers at all?? Where were speakers originally in the 56??

the 55-59 original speaker [one] was in an enclosure just above the mirror

Thanks Squeeze. I always thought the speaker above the mirror was on earlier trucks. Learn something new everyday. I don't like the look tho. Do you have speakers in your truck?

not in the current one, no radio, but I've had the original speaker in 2 others and don't mind the look .... the sound isn't great at highway speeds in an uninsulated cab but it works fine around town

one truck I parted out had custom built speaker enclosures in the corners behind the seat, not sure what that would sound like, but looked better than ones I've seen with holes in the doors or kick panels
