I have a 1951 1 Ton GMC with 17" 8 lug wheels. I want to put the bigger 19.5" 8 lug wheels on my truck. I found a guy who has 19.5" 8 lug wheels on a 1956 1.5 ton, but the hub diameters were wider than my hubs. I've been told if I want the bigger wheels I'll need to find a 1951 1 ton dually. Does anyone know what options I might have? I'm building a rat rod so i wouldn't mind switching to a dually rear end if needed, but my first options would be to find the bigger wheels that fit my current hubs. Thanks for your help.

Single wheels with 8 lugs?
Options are 16" if they fit.
17" as original
19.5" from some (not anywhere close to all) later model trucks.

Not sure about 19" wheels, do you mean to say 19.5"?
Don't know of 20" 8 lug wheels other than perhaps some fancy modern ones.

Yes, I mean the 19.5". I didn't know their exact size. Know where I can find any or what models that will fit the 1951 1 ton?

If you're building a rat rod originality doesn't count. So basically any pre-metic 8-lug wheel that clears your brakes and steering and looks like you want should be fine.

And while I don't know that I would do it, I've seen metric wheels on pre-metic hubs so they must be pretty close to the same.

there was few 8lugged 20's used with 7.50-20 tires but most where 10lug small bolt circle . . .

Do you recall what they were used on? I don't think I've ever seen one though I know I've not seen everything.

Same here, but I haven't looked for any either.

Curious to learn more,

To be honest i haven't a clue what they came from, they where in a pile of loose tires i at first thought they was 19.5's . . .

drug them out here it was an 8 bolt split rim 20 with a 7.50 tire on it, stack of 4 drives 1 steer 6th wheel wasn't to be seen . . .

I thought they was a bit odd but i checked them 3 times all 5 only had 8 holes . . .

I can't remember if i bought them anyhow or just left them behind it was a few years ago . . . I'll check my tire stash . . .

I picked up a 61 3/4t long step a few years ago that has split rim 19.5 8 lugs on it. Don't know if they're original to it or not. I like the look!

I'd expect 19.5" wheels to be one piece tubeless wheels.

My 1958 model 3800 dually has 8R19.5 rims. They are one piece tubeless wheels. The build sheet inside the dash shows that this was an available option for this year. They are 8 lug hub piloted rims. They are riveted rims to centers, and have KH (Kelsey Hayes I think) stamped on them by the valve stem hole. I have every reason to believe these are original to this truck.

The hub pilot diameter is smaller than more modern hub piloted 8R19.5's. The lug diameter is smaller than more modern lug diameters.

I've not seen any "off the shelf" 19.5 rims that would fit on this truck in the same fashion (and I'd love to have a spare!). I'm thinking the "eaton" rear axle of 3/4 and 1 tons from ... not sure early on to 1972 will all use the same hub pilot diameter and lug diameter.

Well...I could be wrong about mine being 3 piece, but I'm pretty sure they are. The truck is stashed away right now, so it would be difficult to verify. I think the Kelsey-Hayes one piece are somewhat rare and valuable, are they not?

the one piece single type 19.5" wheel came on late 50s-? gm box vans(like a bread truck ) & they are fairly rare but can be found. if you want dually or "budd" style wheels look for a gm p30 or p35 box van from sometime in the 70s to maybe early 90s( fritolay wonderbread ). these wheels have an 8 lug bolt pattern & the correct center hole diameter. ratskin you are right the 17.5 single wheels that came on my 1 ton & the 20" dual types are in fact 3 piece. i'd be up a creek if i had to change one! 19.5 tires are much more readily available. these wheels look great on my truck. to me this is the way to go if drive your truck & use it like a truck. changing over to the dual type wheel on the front is a simple matter of finding another gm truck with the hub extenions, they just bolt on to your existing wheel studs. it works for 3/4 tons too. i didn't know until recently that 3/4 tons were available with duals. i used hub extentions from a 54 3/4 ton on my 50 1 ton. if anybodys' interested i have 4 17.5 single wheels blasted & painted with new tires.

I wouldnt mind running into a couple one piece 19.5 rims for the 8-19.5 tires, hub centered for my '63 Grumman. Four hand holes preferred, and 8 lugs required.

the wheels you describe are just like what i have on my truck that came on the gm p30 step vans. they can be found on ebay although you probably won't want to pay the freight. i'd try to get them locally.
