235s were available from 1941 onwards.
gas dude has identified the engine as a 54 235 going into a 1950 Canadian GMC.
Canadian GMCs (especially the small ones) are different from (small) USA GMCs and Canadian GMCs usually came with 216 or 235 engines (depending on the year).
OldSub, as usual, is most likely correct.
