that's the way it's supposed to work cookie, 1st position is parking, 2nd is driving, not both on together .... if you want the modern kind of 'running light' setup, check this tech tip

the tail lights are on both the parking and driving light circuits, so they're powered in either position

Ok Bill thanks for that , i will try the jumper wire tommorrow, looks like an easy fix , Uk law requires you to have your park light on with your main lights.
Thanks again Lez

Just attach the park light wire at the light switch to the tail light connection. Problem solved!

Reading the above posted link, it sez " the tail lamp and turnsignal should be together and are usually four candlepower and the brakelight is six candlepower."
I always thought the brake and turnsignal were the same filament (brighter) and the tail lamps were separate. Yes?

yes, jmoore, that tip is confusing there - he's talking about trucks originally with single element sockets - the front [park] lights will be 4cp, same as the tail element of the rear lights with dual filiment sockets, and the brake lights [which also are the rear turn lights], will be 6cp .... I should have linked further to the item of interest, and it seems to me that confusion was the reason I originally requested that picture be added wink
