Up until I removed the center hinge to separate the two hood halves on my ’41 I had no idea that there is no center pin. I had just assumed it was a sort of piano hinge. How long had Chevy been using that design? Did older models use a piano hinge?

Not sure what you mean by " no center pin " ? There is wire core that threads thru the center of the hinge sections.

You may have inadvertently answered my question if your '40 has a wire core. My '41 does not have any type of core. The two hinge halves seem to be designed to work without any type of core or pin, each side is continuous for its entire length. By removing the front hold down you can slid one half of the hood forward (slipping one half of the hinge through the other) and completely off of the truck while the other hood and hinge half remains in place on the truck.

The hinges on the side panels are the piano hinge type that has a wire core.

Hopefully a few more guys will chime in and help clear this up.

Hi back Kip. You are right / please excuse my brain malfunction *g*. Its been a while since I did my truck. The centre hinge sections slide into each other while the side panels have the piano type hinges.

Someone must know when Chevy used a center pin and when they went to the pinless design.
