Hi from new guy,
I'm the proud owner of a (1950) 3100, restoration project for my son and me. Turns out to be a bit of a FRANKENSTEIN truck. The title says 1950, but it appears to me to have several body parts from a 1949/ Not too unusual since all these things interchange. The original 216 has also been replaced with a 1962 model 235. GREAT, now I don't have to replace the old babbit bearing engine myself. It's also been changed to a 12V system. To top it all off, the original torque tube is gone, replaced with an open rear end. The REAL MYSTERY lies with the transmission. It APPEARS to be a heavy duty MUNCIE 3 SPEED. The only number I've been able to see good enough to read is on the passenger side of the housing casting (GM3 6273262). This transmission has an additional mounting hole on the top! (Which wasn't used in this application by the way). My Dad looked at it and said he thought the tranny was possibly from an olds or buick. From the scant information I can find on the 'net, this tranny may have come from a '52 or '62 cadillac!
Does anyone have a good refernce for identifying this beast?
Thanks,
Bluedawg

Not likely from a Cadillac as they would have used automatic transmission in '52 amd '62 with an integral bellhousing. Not likely from an Olds or Buick either unless it was a small one like an F85 or something. Does it have a fine spline output shaft?

got a syncro first? later [post 68] Saginaw truck trans fits right on the late 235's and is a common swap

Well that was a bloody fine mess.
Sorry, next time I'll just add the link, not the photos...

I bought a 1972 Chev. van 1 ton with heavy duty trans, this looks a lot like that one. the trans was huge probably weighed over 100 lbs. It had synchromesh on all 3 forward gears, and was a bolt in replacement to the standard truck bell housing.

Whatever it is, it looks like it's been there a while. I've never seen one with top mounting hole like that. Strange.

yeah, that triangle piece top front is odd, but otherwise it looks like the saginaw syncro 3spd with aftermarket shift levers, or home-made

I concur with chevman32. They used an aluminum bellhousing with a 12" clutch and a rear mount. It was for extra support. Fred
