For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 32 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 32 | Have a 1964 c10 short box fleet side. Want to rebuild rearend with detroit truetrac posi and 3:42 gears. One small problem, 17 spline avles and yoke. Will 30 spline axles work in my housing, and what to do about the yoke? Help! | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | 30 spline axles will work just fine. You'll have to source the yoke from a later truck or aftermarket.

Axle shafts will depend on what you want to do lug bolt pattern wise. 6 lug can be done using up to '70 as a direct drop in, '71 and later can be used to change to 5 lug (with the appropriate drums), but the axle shafts are about an inch longer, so some alteration would be necessary. A machine shop can shorten and regroove the later axles to fit your early housing. Axle shafts from the '77-'87 10 bolt will work, too.

Was just going to freshen up orignal setup, but at some point in time, previous owner broke spider gear teeth, then just replaced them without cleaning out debris, which ended up in everything. Thus the rebuild. Thanks alot for everything. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 32 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 32 | Would the 10 bolt axles require cutting and regrooving? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | Yes, but otherwise, they will work. bearing and spline size are the same. They do have to come from a truck 10 bolt, though.
