So, I am finally buckled down and looking for the truck I have desired for so many years. I have found about 3 of them so far, and I just want to go prepared when I go look at them. One I am going to check out is a 61 4x4 shortbox stepside with a straight 6/ standard. To begin, I would like to know what lug patterns the trucks were in these two years. This one appears to be a 6 lug, but someone suggested the older Chevy's were 5 lug. I do not know if maybe both were available or what, so any input would be appreciated.

With a couple of minor exceptions, all Chevy 1/2 tons are 6 lug. 3/4 tons are 8 lug. In the early 70's 5 lugs were used on 2 wheel drive trucks for a time and then went back to 6 lug. They are still 6 lug to this day. So the 67-72 series were the only 5 luggers out there.
All 60-66 1/2 tons are 6 lug whether 2wd or 4x4.
Check out Woogeroo's tips on 60--6 trucks on these pages before you go look at the 3 trucks. The best advice I can give you is, if the overhang over the windshield is rotted, walk away quickly. Pretty much everything else is correctable, but that area means the cab is pretty much terminal!

They were all 6 lug, chevy started putting 5 lugs on 2wd in 71 I believe but 4x4 stayed 6 lug

I looked at two of them so far, one was very poor condition. I am curious, did the 4wd models all have autolocking hubs? The truck I looked at today had manual locking hubs, but was something someone cobbled up and they don't work. I liked he truck very much, needs some body work but did not seem to see most of the trouble spots I read about. Heck, we took it for a ride. I was like a kid in a candy store sitting in the old girl lol.
