I picked up a 305 with a turbo 350 really cheap. I discovered it has 327 heads on it! My question is , is this a good set up or should I look for some other heads? I plan on using the engine/trans in my 46 1/2 ton. I want good profomance with good MPGs.

305's use heads with small valves as the larger valves will hit the cyl. walls. . You must have small valve heads or someone has ground a recess for them. You may get good performance but you won't get high performance from a 305.

Thanks for the responce. I not looking for high high performance. The 305 seemed like a good choice for good gas milage and good performance. The heads are 1.72/1.50 or 1.84/1.50 valves (8795896). I see alot about 416 305 heads. I wonder if they would be a better choice? Im not looking to build a race truck and I don't want to spend alot of money

The 305 heads with the 58CC combustion chambers can be opened up for 1.84/1.6 valves, and with a little pocket porting, you'll have good breathing and reasonable compression. There's a machine shop down in Florida that's selling heads set up that way, with guide plates and all the go-fast goodies for a very reasonable price. I don't remember the name of the place, but they advertise on E Pay all the time. The 283/327 "Power Pack" head with the pyramid-shaped casting identifier on the end of the head also has a 58CC chamber, but the valves are smaller.

Thanks Jerry I am leaning towards replacing the 283/327 heads for the 416s.
